After some months, I want to post again photos of the Liffey river in Dublin in Ireland. As mentioned in previous posts, I took dozens of photos of the Irish river in the year 2002. I hope you like the photos.

After some weeks, I am back posting photos of the Liffey river in Dublin in Ireland. This photo of the Liffey got my attention because depicts depth. The different colours on the buildings next to the Liffey, portray the distances between them.

In some of the buildings the sun light is brighter, and in some others there is no light, only shadows. Very interesting photo of the Liffey in Dublin.

What I am going to say is no news for the average photographer, but perhaps it is for the rest of the people. If you wait for some seconds, specially when taking photos of sunsets, the colours of your photos will change from one photo to the next. The photo will change as well depending to which element you give more priority: the sky, the water, the shadows, the sun, etc.

In today's photo of the Liffey, the colours are different from several photos I did exactly the same day in exactly the same position. In other photos, when the sky is the objective, the photo of the Liffey is clearer and goes more to purple, in some other photos goes to blue, but still had some combinations of purple.

In our photo of the Liffey above, the colour is blue. But still a very nice combination with the rest of the elements and colours in the photo.

I have several night photos of the Liffey that are blurry, because it was cold, because I was in a hurry and I wanted to get home, or because my pulse is not the best for night photos. In the night photo of the Liffey above, I got a clear photo. The combination of light colours is interesting, not spectacular as in other photos, but interesting still.

I really like this photo of the Liffey in Dublin. Pictures motion, reflects a cosmopolitan city, but also the beauty of Dublin. All the different colours of the sunset add a nice contrast to the photo as well.

This is another photo of the Liffey with low tide. It was not an often phenomenon in Dublin, to see the Liffey with so few water and looked strange. Normally, the are no boats in the Liffey, so the low tide was not really a problem. But it really took away some of the beauty of Dublin in downtown. With the weather in Dublin it was seldom that you could find a tranquil, still river Liffey. On this particular photo, the Liffey was very still, enough to get a nice reflection of the street lamps on the water. I like this photo a lot, as it shows different colours: pink, purple, blue and many tones more in between.

Now that I have posting photos of the Liffey for more than a month almost each day, I have notice that some of the photos are incredibly good, some are average and some are just bad photos. Before I just looked at the nice photos or I looked at them as a whole, as a group of photos of the Liffey. But now I have the opportunity of looking at them and choose what I think might be the best photo to post.

It amazes me how blue this photo of the Liffey is. In fact we have two colours that dominate the photo: black and blue. Only a pair of lights from cars on the right break the darkness of Dublin and the Liffey. Very nice photo. And the contour of our already familiar scenery creates a good harmony on the photo. I guess I gave more space to the right, to capture the reflection of the scenery on the Liffey. Because of the trees you could tell is winter time in Dublin. Sometimes, when we walked trough one of the bridges to cross the Liffey, it was very interesting to see the seagulls. They were flying, but they were not moving, either the wind was so strong that they struggle to move, or they were so tired that they were resting for some seconds, I never knew. I am not sure if when there is low tide in the Liffey it is because there is few water or because there is a dam upriver which blocks the water from time to time. Coincidentally, it was in Dublin in august when I saw this happening several times. After seeing the river during the whole year wit loads of water, this view is a great difference.

I only tried once to take a black and white photo for the serie of photos of the Liffey in Dublin, wondering whether it was going to be interesting. When I finally saw the printed result, it was boring and not interesting at all. But what did work, was photos with Dias. The one above is one of them. The colours are great, you can even see the light coming out of the street lamps.

This is a particularly nice photo. That day the clouds were lined and with a purplish-bluish-pinkish kind of colours, making a very nice photo of Dublin and the Liffey.

I remember one day, when the clouds were just as nice as in the image above, but I could not go to take the photo, as I was working on my thesis. I really had to convince myself not to go out.

I took this photo in summer. Perhaps late summer. As it looks like the clouds are taking over the sunny day, to bring some rain to Dublin. I like it a lot, as you can not distinguish any color but the blue of the sky, the blue of the river, gray and white of the clouds and Dublin itself in shadows.

One sunny day in May in 2002 in Dublin, an Irish friend said, after all of a sudden had started raining: "That's it, that was summer". I did not know he was joking of course. There are sunny warm days in Dublin.

In summer, in the Bachelor's walk, people sit and enjoy the sun. For some months, some small coffee shops open, and you can enjoy some drinks just next to the Liffey.

In the photo, I was lucky enough for a clear sunny day. You can see the famous Clarance Hotel, a bit of the Guinness Museum, and the Four Courts Building. The latter always present in these series of photos.

The photos at night were particularly difficult. Not enough light, cold weather and a shaky pulse, did not help me very much.

I took the photos with an analogue camera and I had to scan all the pictures I am publishing here. I did not scan the prints but the negatives and dias, that's why sometimes you get to see some dust on the image. Normally I didn't enhance the colour, the contrast, or anything on the photo.

The photos at night, were specially difficult to scan, as the scanner did not recognise the dark areas of the picture. I had to dismiss some of them, as it turned out impossible to get a good scan.

I guess this was one the (many) days in Dublin, when the weather is cold and the sky is gray. Some times I took photos while it was raining, with a strong wind and very very cold.

I remember I used to go by a coffee shop in Temple Bar, for a cappuccino to take away. Later I found out about the coffee bar at the University.

I really managed to get different sorts of colours in the photos. Here for example, the pink adds a very tranqui-cool mood to the picture. The reflexion of the lights, are nice as welll. You almost forget how chaotic an afternoon can be in Dublin, with all the traffic.

There were 3 bridges that I used frequently to cross from one side of Dublin to the other one: The Ha'penny Bridge, the Dublin Millenium Footbridge and the Grattan Bridge. This photo was taken from the former.

Sunny Dublin and a sunset in the Liffey

Is not as unusual as some might think. That day was sunny and I caught the sunset. In some photos you might see how high is the water and in some other ones, is very low. You can see that the Liffey, at least in the area next to Temple Bar, is not so deep. And for those who have never been to Dublin, there are no ships or boats running through the river.

As I mentioned earlier, I witnessed beautiful views of the Liffey. I remember this occasion in which it was already dark, but a little bit of sun light could be seen on the horizon. At the same time, the reflections of the cars, the street lamps and houses, added a nice effect to the photo.

I am aware that the photo is a bit blurry, but the photo is still nice.

I lived in Ireland, in Dublin for one year.

I was living in the north and each day, during the week, I had to cross the Liffey river to go the University where I studied. Almost each time I crossed, I took a photo. It was not always the same bridge but it was always in the same direction. The other side had an ugly building that was not very inspiring.

Now I have decided to publish each one of the photos in this blog. One per post.

I took the photos sometimes in the early morning, sometimes during night. In winter as well as in summer.
